State Attorneys General Investigations

The Troutman Sanders State Attorneys General Investigations team includes a former state Attorney General, a former state Solicitor General, a former Deputy Attorney General, as well as several former Assistant Attorneys General. Moreover, our team has extensive experience in the private sector across many industries, representing clients in matters involving individual and multistate Attorneys General investigations. The team delivers a proactive approach allowing our clients to anticipate issues before they result in regulatory disputes or litigation.

We have extensive experience representing clients in state Attorneys General matters which have derived from the enforcement actions by several federal regulatory agencies, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and others, as well as state regulatory agencies including the state corporation commissions. In an increasingly active regulatory environment, it is essential for companies to employ a proactive approach to compliance and risk management. We often advise clients on compliance management systems and other risk management strategies to protect their businesses.

Our approach, which we describe as “legal diplomacy,” combines a thorough knowledge of the law with an understanding of the policy and personality factors that can affect decision-making by state Attorneys General. We maintain regular contact with the state Attorneys General through participation in key organizations, including the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA), Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA), Conference of Western Attorneys General (CWAG), and the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). In addition, we build relationships with key staff in Attorneys General offices, a task made easier by the fact that many on our team once served on state Attorneys General staffs.
