The protection and preservation of our natural resources is a major area of concern for current and future federal administrations. As attention increases on the environment and the potential to exhaust the planet’s assets, so does the creation of regulation around managing and monitoring the usage of land, water and other resources.

Troutman Sanders’ environmental and natural resources practice lawyers are more than familiar with the various policies, agencies and processes involved in this field. Many of our lawyers held top-level natural resources-related positions on Capitol Hill, at federal agencies, and in state and tribal government. Also, our hydropower practice is supported by the former director of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Office of Hydropower Licensing, who now serves as the firm's hydropower licensing advisor .

Our contacts and substantive knowledge of the law allow us to serve private- and public-sector clients on numerous complex natural resource matters. These engagements have involved protected species, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, water resource development, wetlands and public lands.

Representative Experience

  • Served as environmental counsel on numerous major capital projects, including pipelines, hydroelectric facilities, fossil-fired electricity plants, airport projects, commercial developments, highway construction projects and extensive work for cities seeking federal permits for water projects.
  • Negotiated and won congressional enactment of an exchange of valuable forest and riparian lands between a large private landowner and a federal agency.
