Redevelopment efforts such as the Environmental Protection Agency’s Re-Powering America’s Land Initiative are bringing a renewed focus to the use of brownfields and voluntary cleanups. In recent years, private- and public-sector groups have converted previously abandoned and unused brownfield properties into viable commercial, retail and residential sites. As a further incentive to businesses and organizations, the EPA’s Brownfields Program offers grants and other funding for the assessment and cleanup of such sites.
