Troutman Sanders Merges With Ross, Dixon & Bell
January 2, 2009
ATLANTA (January 2, 2009) – Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that it has completed a previously announced merger with Ross, Dixon & Bell, LLP, creating a 785-attorney firm with national and international reach.
The merger, which was finalized on January 2, combines Troutman Sanders’ multi-faceted corporate, finance, litigation, real estate and public policy practices with Ross, Dixon & Bell’s exceptional insurance, professional liability and commercial litigation practices, among other synergies.
The merged firm retains the name of Troutman Sanders LLP and remains headquartered in Atlanta. The firm employs about 1,700 people worldwide.
For the first time, Troutman Sanders operates offices on the West Coast and in Chicago. The merger also doubled the size of Troutman Sanders’ presence in Washington, D.C., to more than 100 attorneys.
“Joining forces with Ross, Dixon & Bell positions us extremely well for the future,” said Robert W. Webb Jr., who has been Troutman Sanders’ managing partner since 1993 and remains chairman and managing partner of the merged firm. “Adding a world-class litigation practice and expanding into the Southern California and Chicago markets strengthens Troutman Sanders at a time when many other law firms are struggling and even closing.”
Ross, Dixon & Bell started in 1983 when seven lawyers from a major Washington, D.C., law firm decided to launch their own practice. The firm developed a national reputation for its work in directors and officers liability, led by partners Stu Ross, Gary Dixon and Roy Bell, and quickly grew into a highly respected, broad-based civil litigation practice.
Troutman Sanders was founded in 1897 and has grown dramatically in the past 15 years, opening offices in New York, Washington, D.C., London, Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as merging with the four offices of Virginia firm Mays & Valentine in 2000.
With more than 50 areas of legal practice, Troutman Sanders is organized into five sections: Corporate, Finance, Litigation, Public Law, and Real Estate. Troutman Sanders recently was honored as one of only 30 law firms in The BTI Client Service 30, ranking 9th among the elite law firms that clients say are the best at client service. The firm also was ranked #1 by Chambers USA in 12 practice categories and received 21 other rankings.
