Troutman Sanders Names Firm-Wide Chief Operating Officer

Robert Seabolt, veteran litigator and law firm leader, promoted
February 7, 2011

ATLANTAThe law firm of Troutman Sanders LLP has promoted partner Robert D. Seabolt to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer.

In this new role, Seabolt will lead and supervise most of the firm’s administrative functions. Those functions include information technology, human resources, recruiting, professional development, marketing, public relations, and billing and collections. Seabolt will report directly to Managing Partner Stephen E. Lewis.

“Bob was the first and only choice to be Troutman Sanders’ first COO,” said Lewis. “He has been a valuable member of the firm’s leadership for a number of years and will help ensure that our staff continues to provide outstanding day-to-day support for our lawyers and clients.”

Seabolt, 55, is an experienced litigator who has concentrated his practice on antitrust enforcement and white collar criminal defense. He also was managing partner of Richmond, Va.-based Mays & Valentine LLP from 1993 until the firm’s 2001 merger with Troutman Sanders.

As COO, Seabolt will share his time between his home office of Richmond, Va., and the firm’s Atlanta headquarters. Also, in mid-2011, he will take over the duties of William R. Ramsey, who will retire as Executive Director.

Ramsey, 62, has served in that role for 21 years and directed the firm’s administrative management team through extraordinary growth. When Ramsey arrived at the firm in February 1990, Troutman Sanders had one office in Atlanta; today, it has 16 offices on three continents.

“Bill built an outstanding staff to support our growth and was a key player in every office opening and every law firm merger,” said Robert W. Webb Jr., the firm’s chairman. “He has led by example with his tireless efforts, dedication and commitment to the firm, which I very much appreciate and admire.”
