Troutman Sanders Creates New Practice Groups in Transportation, Maritime Law

July 15, 2010

Atlanta – The law firm of Troutman Sanders LLP is pleased to announce it has split its Transportation practice into two new practice groups in a move designed to better and more efficiently serve the needs of the firm's diverse spectrum of transportation clients.

A newly renamed Transportation and Logistics practice group will be led by Washington, D.C., partner Charles Hunnicutt and will continue to provide the services that garnered it top-tier national rankings in Chambers USA for its multi-modal transportation practice. The group advises clients with their multi-modal transportation needs, as well as with third-party logistics, and export and import compliance issues.

The other new practice group – Maritime Law and Government Contracts – will be led by Norfolk, Va., partner Chris Abel and will represent clients across the full range of marine and government contracts matters before state and federal courts, the U.S. Congress and a variety of federal regulatory agencies. This team of lawyers, which has practical seagoing, commercial, and other maritime experience, will take a proactive approach to resolving cases as early and economically as possible.

“This change will allow both practice groups to focus on and expand their areas of expertise,” said Robert W. Webb Jr., chairman and managing partner of Troutman Sanders. “Both groups will continue to work closely with one another as they focus the firm's efforts on assisting clients with navigating the increasingly complex legal challenges and opportunities presented by today's fast-changing and interconnected supply chain and global business environment.”

The Transportation and Logistics group has a core team of over a dozen attorneys whose experience encompasses regulatory advice and counsel, commercial and financial advice, and state and federal lobbying. In addition, the group's litigators have represented clients successfully in administrative litigation and in civil litigation in state and federal courts.

The group has been recognized nationally by Chambers and by the International Who’s Who of Shipping and Maritime as a leader in the transportation realm.

The new Maritime Law and Government Contracts group will provide assistance with a variety of maritime legal matters, including admiralty jurisdiction and preemption (Uniformity); cargo claims; commercial fishing and fishery matters; collision and allision cases; environmental compliance and claims, to include oil spill and marine sanctuary cases; licensure, documentation and registration laws and regulations; marine insurance coverage; maritime finance; maritime government contracts; maritime personal injury and death; riparian rights; stevedore and marine contractor negligence claims; terminal owner and operator representation; and vessel charters.

In addition, the newly created practice group will regularly advise contractors and government agencies on local, state and federal public contracts issues, including the preparation of bid and contract documents, defending successful procurements from challenges by unsuccessful vendors, and prosecuting and defending bid protests.

The group’s lawyers handle litigation nationwide, and have experience in litigating cases in federal courts in every region of the country. For their efforts and experience, many of these attorneys have been repeatedly recognized as outstanding in their perspective fields by Martindale-Hubbell, Best Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation and Super Lawyers.
