Stu is a senior partner and founded Ross, Dixon & Masback in 1983 with Gary V. Dixon and Harold E. Masback, III. He has 41 years of litigation experience, which has been exceptionally diverse and ranges from the landmark decision in the Passamaquoddy & Penobscot Indian rights case to representation of major American and foreign corporations in courts throughout the United States. Stu is frequently asked for counsel by corporate executives and is general counsel to numerous national trade associations. He has been asked on numerous occasions to conduct special investigations for clients and was appointed by a member of the United States Senate to conduct a highly visible staff investigation.
Mr. Ross has been active in national political elections and local District of Columbia affairs. He has been a Board Member and Past Chairman of the District of Columbia United Way; acting in starting Day Care Centers; served as President of his Neighborhood Civic Association and is presently an elected District of Columbia Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner.
Representative Experience
Litigated the earliest known Directors & Officers Insurance case in America.
Sued the U.S. Interior Department in an action that resulted in the United States Senate passing the Endangered Species Act.
Acted as Special Counsel to the State of Nevada in various suits including the successful defense of the State’s entire system of gaming laws and regulators.
Represented Lloyd’s of London in negotiation with NASA for the rescue and then commercial sale of two satellites brought back to earth from errant orbits.
Represented a defendant in the landmark case, Liggett Group, Inc. v. ACE Property & Cas. Ins. Co., effectively ending all tobacco litigation for the insurance industry.
Representing The Humane Society of the United States, pro bono, negotiated settlement to obstruct the sale of criminal animal fighting magazines.
Helped to craft the class action mechanisms used to settle $2 billion of asbestos liabilities.
