How should I apply for a summer associate position at Troutman Sanders? Please check the 2L Interview Schedule or 1L Interview Schedule to see if Troutman Sanders participates in your law school's on-campus interview program or resume collection. If so, please check with your career services office for dates and guidelines for submitting a resume, cover letter and transcript to us.
If you don't see your law school on our list, please direct your resume, cover letter and transcript to the Recruiting Manager at the office in which you are interested. Do not send duplicate information to us if you have already submitted this information through your law school.
If you do not live in the city for which you have applied, and you plan to be in the area, please indicate the dates of your visit in your cover letter.
Which offices at Troutman Sanders hire summer associates? Currently, only our Atlanta, New York, Richmond, Washington, D.C., Virginia Beach, Tysons Corner and Raleigh offices have summer associate programs.
How many summer associates received permanent offers or offers to return the following summer?
For the summer of 2006, the firm made the following hiring decisions:
- Of 57 second years, 54 received offers.
- Of 17 1L’s, 16 received an offer to return the following summer.
Does Troutman Sanders hire 1Ls for its summer associate program? Yes, the firm hires 1Ls. We accept 1L resumes between December 1 and January 15 each year. Please see our 1L Interview Schedule for information about on-campus interviews for first years. Because we have very limited space for 1Ls, we often have to turn away students we would like to have in our program as 2Ls. Please don't be discouraged if you are not accepted as a 1L. Just reapply!
Does Troutman Sanders allow summer associates to split their summers? Yes, we do allow our summer associates to split their summers. However, we require our 2Ls to work a minimum of seven weeks during the first half of the summer. We require our 1Ls to work a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer.
What is the timing of the fall interview process? Typically, we interview 2Ls on-campus from August though September. Usually our callback interviews begin in early September and end by mid-October. We try to respond to candidates as soon as possible, usually within two to four weeks of their callback interviews.
Does Troutman Sanders have a bonus structure? Yes, the firm's bonus structure is based on billable hours, with the bonus amounts varying depending on the hours billed. The bonus productivity plan range starts at 1900 billable hours.
What is the partnership track at Troutman Sanders? Prior to 2000, the firm would not consider associates for admission to the partnership until they had practiced seven and a half years. Now, associates are considered for partnership as soon as they satisfy the firm's criteria for admission, regardless of the number of years they have practiced.
Is Troutman Sanders involved in pro bono activities? The firm actively encourages and facilitates a wide variety of pro bono activities including support or philanthropic organizations, community service projects, Atlanta Lawyers for the Arts, Saturday Volunteer Lawyers and Bar sponsored activities.
Troutman Sanders expects each lawyer to meet his or her professional responsibility, as set forth in Rule 6.1 of the Georgia, New York, Virginia, and D.C. Rules of Professional Responsibility, to provide 50 hours per year of pro bono services. To encourage this, the firm provides a credit of up to 50 pro bono hours a year against attorney minimum billable hour expectations.
