Filip’s practice focuses intellectual property matters, specifically patent prosecution, litigation, and counseling. His prosecution work includes preparing and prosecuting domestic, foreign, and design patent applications for inventions in the medical, telecommunication, electronic (computer hardware/software), and mechanical arts. In addition to preparing patent applications, Filip routinely performs patentability assessments to formulate optimal prosecution strategies for clients’ inventions.
Filip’s counseling includes preparing non-infringement opinions, product evaluations, and freedom-to-operate opinions for clients’ products primarily in the areas of medical devices, telecommunications, electronics, and software.
Filip also assists clients in successfully asserting and defending intellectual property claims in various litigation matters, and also provides advice to clients on licensing intellectual property. Filip frequently participates in corporate due diligence projects requiring careful study of intellectual property assets for deal integrity.
Prior to joining Troutman Sanders, Filip was a patent examiner for the United States Patent and Trademark Office where he examined U.S. and PCT applications, prepared office actions, restrictions and elections of species, responses to amendments and remarks, advisory actions and conducted attorney interviews. Filip examined patent applications in the interdisciplinary field of biomedical testing and diagnostics, incorporating technology from the mechanical and electrical engineering, biology, software/programming, and communication arts. Filip leverages his experience as a patent examiner to assist his clients in attaining their patent portfolio goals.
