Consumer Law: Multi-State Trade Regulation Investigations, Litigation & Counseling

The Troutman Sanders Consumer Law Practice Group: Multi-State Trade Regulation Investigations, Litigation & Counseling consists of former attorneys general, assistant attorneys general, commissioners of consumer protection agencies, and current and former law school professors. This distinguished group of attorneys includes 17 partners who collectively have several hundred years of experience in multi-state trade regulation investigations, litigation and counseling, as well as advising companies that provide consumer goods and services. Whether you are a financial services company, a retailer or a consumer products or service company, we have the industry leading attorneys and depth and breadth of experience to handle all of your consumer law-related matters.

The Practice Group defends banks, financing companies, mortgage lenders and loan servicers in individual and consumer class actions brought under the Truth in Lending Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act, Lanham Act, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, Odometer Act, Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Uniform Commercial Code, and state unfair and deceptive trade practices laws, credit disclosure laws, and usury laws.

We also represent clients from all industry sectors before the Federal Trade Commission, State Attorneys General across the nation, and local consumer protection agencies; and, we handle product recalls before the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. We also represent financial institutions and insurers before state regulatory agencies.

Since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, we regularly advise clients on legal compliance in the areas of advertising, promotions, sweepstakes and skill contests, product safety, labeling, warranties, telemarketing, e-marketing, in-home sales, credit sales, debt collection, identity theft, secured lending, and credit and title insurance. Additionally, we assist lenders in creating consumer arbitration programs.

We also perform legal compliance audits of portfolios and businesses on behalf of clients who are either purchasing or financing the assets.

We have also had the privilege of providing counseling to foreign countries in their adoption of consumer protection laws.
