Two Troutman Sanders Partners Named "Groundbreaking Lawyers”

December 10, 2009

ATLANTA – Two Troutman Sanders partners have been named to Public Utilities Fortnightly magazine’s first-ever list of “Groundbreaking Lawyers.”

Washington, D.C., office managing partner Kevin C. Fitzgerald and firm-wide Energy practice group leader Clifford S. Sikora were among 30 attorneys selected by the magazine for its special November issue titled “2009 Groundbreaking Law and Lawyers Report.”

To identify lawyers at the forefront of the industry’s groundbreaking legal developments, the magazine surveyed in-house counsel at utilities, public utility commissions and trade associations. They were asked to nominate “attorneys who have distinguished themselves with exemplary work in a range of practice areas,” according to magazine editor-in-chief Michael Burr.

“With those nominations as a starting point,” Burr said, “Fortnightly's editors developed the magazine's first-ever hot list of groundbreaking lawyers.”

Fitzgerald, in addition to managing Troutman Sanders’ Washington office, is a member of the firm’s executive committee. He counsels energy companies, investors and developers in the electric, natural gas and renewable energy markets. Most recently, Fitzgerald provided counsel to senior executives of a national gas holding company regarding a going-private transaction, and has been involved in fundraising activities for renewable energy developers.

Sikora, a partner in the Washington office and leader of the Energy practice group, specializes in electric transmission (rate and tariff regulation, project development, EPC issues and reliability); electric power contracts and transactions; energy asset transactions; renewable energy financing and development; energy company mergers and strategic planning; FERC litigation; FERC compliance; and FERC enforcement counseling and defense.

Troutman Sanders has served utility clients since the 1920s and is a leading provider of legal services to the energy and utility industries worldwide. Over the years, the firm's Energy group has been engaged by electric and natural gas utilities, and renewable energy producers on virtually every aspect of their businesses.

The group has played a major role representing clients in high-profile matters, such as the California electricity crisis, the Eastern Interconnection Blackout of 2003 and the downfall of Enron Corp. The group also has been particularly instrumental in representing gas and electric clients in unbundling matters in Europe, China, South East Asia, as well as North and South America.

Clients recognize the value of the firm’s service. BTI Consulting Group has regularly ranked Troutman Sanders’ utilities industry practice as #1 in the United States.
